Caught in the Act: Business Fined £500 for Dumping Rubbish in Another’s Bin
A business has been fined £500 after disposing of its waste in another company’s private bin store without permission. The offence was uncovered following an investigation by Cornwall Council’s Community Protection Team in summer 2024.
Investigation Uncovers Fly-Tipping
The issue came to light when a business reported that extra waste was being dumped alongside its own rubbish. Council enforcement officers traced the waste back to the offending business, which admitted to the offence when confronted with the evidence.
As a result, the business was issued with a £500 Fixed Penalty Notice for fly-tipping, which has now been paid in full.
Legal Responsibilities for Business Waste
Under the law, all businesses—regardless of size—must ensure their waste is disposed of properly by a licensed waste carrier. Business waste cannot be mixed with household rubbish or taken to Household Waste and Recycling Centres (HWRCs).
Councillor Martyn Alvey, portfolio holder for Environment at Cornwall Council, said:
“It is totally unacceptable for a business to expect another business to get rid of their waste.
“All businesses, big or small, must ensure that all their waste is removed by a licensed waste carrier.
“Our enforcement team work hard to ensure there is a level playing field for all businesses and that they are disposing of their rubbish legally and responsibly.”
Businesses looking for guidance on waste disposal can find more information on the Cornwall Council website.
