Coodes Appoints New Chair: What Does This Mean for Cornwall and Devon?
Coodes Solicitors, one of the UK’s longest-established law firms, has entered a new era as Elise Alma has been appointed as its new Chair.
Founded in 1747, Coodes has been part of the fabric of Cornwall and Devon for more than 275 years. With over 180 staff and eight offices across the region, the firm advises individuals, families and businesses on a wide range of legal matters, often over multiple generations.
Elise takes on the role following the retirement of Peter Lamble, who has led the firm since 2014. During Peter’s leadership, Coodes became an £11 million-plus business and secured its place among the top four per cent of UK law firms by turnover.
Elise Alma Steps Up
Elise, already a member of the firm’s executive board, brings more than 30 years of family law experience to her new role. She joined Coodes in 1987 and played a key role in growing the Family Law team from just two lawyers to one of the largest and most respected in the region.
“I am honoured and very proud to follow in the footsteps of those who have led Coodes throughout its history and to have the opportunity to lead the fabulous team of people that make up the firm today,” said Elise.
She added: “Coodes has been an important part of Cornwall and Devon for a long time, growing and evolving to support our community and meet the changing needs of individuals, families and businesses. Indeed, we are lifelong legal partners for many of our clients for whom we are proud to say we are ‘your lawyers for life’.”
Recognised Leader in Law
Elise’s expertise in family law is widely recognised. She is a member of the Law Society’s Children Law Panel, a longstanding Resolution-accredited specialist in financial disputes and domestic abuse, and a member of the Law Society Family Panel.
Her commitment extends beyond the firm. Elise has served as President of both Cornwall Law Society and the Association of South Western Law Societies, where she has influenced policy, championed professional development and mentored future legal talent.
A Fond Farewell to Peter Lamble
Peter Lamble retires after 23 years at Coodes, including 11 as its first Chair. Reflecting on his time with the firm, Peter said: “I am incredibly proud of the role Coodes plays in supporting communities across Cornwall and Devon and it has been a privilege to work alongside so many dedicated colleagues as custodians of this great firm.”
Peter highlighted the firm’s progress, including the milestone of having more female partners than male for the first time in its history.
Looking Ahead
Coodes continues to strengthen its presence in the region. Since April 2023, the firm has expanded its team by nearly 15 per cent, reinforcing its role as a key employer across Cornwall and Devon.
Recognised by both the Legal 500 and UK Chambers and Partners, Coodes remains committed to providing expert legal advice while staying true to its community roots.
