Two Cornish Marine Giants Join Forces to Shape Future of Yacht Building
In a significant move that promises to reshape the landscape of the marine industry in Cornwall, Pendennis Shipyard has acquired a majority interest in Cockwells Modern & Classic Boatbuilding. This partnership is set to amplify the capabilities and reach of both companies in the superyacht sector.
Strategic Alliance in Marine Manufacturing
Pendennis Shipyard, a leader in custom superyacht construction and refit services, is joining forces with Cockwells Modern & Classic Boatbuilding, known for their bespoke superyacht tenders and the prestigious Duchy Motor Launch brand. This collaboration aims to leverage the strengths of both companies to enhance their product offerings and expand their market presence.
Dean Short, Managing Director of Cockwells, expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership. “We are thrilled to be advancing into the next phase of our growth with the support of Pendennis,” he said. “Their expertise and resources will be invaluable as we launch our latest model, the Duchy 45, and continue to innovate across our product lines.”
A History of Collaboration
The two companies are not strangers to collaboration, having worked together on numerous projects where Cockwells has provided customised tenders for Pendennis-built superyachts. This formalised partnership is a natural progression of their long-standing relationship, aiming to further their joint mission of excellence in yacht building and refurbishment.
Expanding Capabilities and Reach
Toby Allies, Managing Director of the Pendennis Group, outlined the strategic fit between the two companies. “Cockwells and Pendennis share many of the same values and cater to similar clientele in the superyacht industry,” he explained. The integration of Cockwells into the Pendennis Group will enhance our offerings and help us meet the growing demands of our clients.”
Cockwells has grown significantly since its inception by Dave Cockwell, who started the company in a small space in Bristol 28 years ago. Today, Cockwells operates from three sites in Cornwall and employs over 140 staff. “Joining forces with Pendennis is a milestone that will help us scale our operations and satisfy the increasing global demand for our luxury vessels,” Dave added.
Continued Independence and Expansion
Despite the change in ownership, Cockwells will maintain operational independence with Dean Short continuing as Managing Director and Dave Cockwell in his role as Sales and Technical Director. This arrangement ensures that the brand will continue to thrive under the established management while benefiting from the resources and network of the Pendennis Group.
