Callington Community College Students Take Part in Cornwall Youth Council Elections

Students at Callington Community College have been getting a hands on taste of democracy after taking part in the Cornwall Youth Council Elections.

On Tuesday 10th February, pupils in Years 7 to 10 cast their votes using real ballot boxes and polling booths from UK General Elections, turning the school into a fully functioning polling station for the day.

The elections were coordinated by Cornwall Council’s Children’s Rights Team, who praised the students for their maturity and enthusiasm. Staff said the authentic voting set up helped young people understand the importance of having a voice and taking part in local decision making.

Callington Candidates in the Spotlight

In South East Cornwall, seven candidates are standing for election to the Youth Council. Four of them are students at Callington Community College.

To stand, each student had to submit an application explaining why they wanted to be involved and what issues they hoped to improve. The topics put forward included environmental concerns, transport and safety, as well as wider opportunities for young people in the local area.

Official results will be shared once they have been confirmed.

“It Feels Like a Real Election”

Students said the experience stood out because of how closely it mirrored a general election.

Madeleine Thorne said:
“It was really useful and interesting to participate in these elections.”

Tianna Jones added:
“We’ve never done anything like this before. It feels like a real election!”

Jake Prince said he was focused on the issues when deciding how to vote.
“I was looking to vote for someone who wants to improve services for young people in Cornwall. Using the real voting equipment made it feel like a general election.”

Pride in Student Leadership

Ed Davis, Associate Assistant Principal at Callington Community College, led and coordinated the project.

Ed Davis said:
“We are incredibly proud that four of the seven candidates standing for election are Callington students – a remarkable achievement that reflects their character and commitment. Each of these young people embodies our school values: courageous in putting themselves forward, ambitious in wanting to represent the voices of others, respectful in the way they have engaged with the democratic process, and encouraging by inspiring their peers to take an interest in youth leadership. Their willingness to step up and serve their community shows the very best of what our students can achieve.”

With real ballot boxes, real booths and real candidates, students were able to see first hand how the democratic process works, long before they are old enough to vote in a general election.
