Over £2,000 Worth of Support Donated to Camelot Kennels in Callington

A Cornish dog rescue centre is celebrating a major step forward thanks to a generous donation of discounted fencing materials from Wire Fence, helping transform life for the German Shepherds in their care.

The company contributed £2,379.80 worth of fencing to German Shepherd Rescue Elite (GSRE) to support their newly acquired six-acre site, Camelot Kennels, based in Callington, Cornwall.

The fencing has helped secure over 500 metres of land, including a new outdoor training area and much of the woodland walk. These improvements are vital for safely housing the high-energy working breeds supported by the charity.

A Rescue with Experience at the Helm

The kennels are managed by Dave Wardell, a former police dog handler with more than 35 years of experience. Dave is known nationally for his work with police dog Finn, who was injured in service and went on to help inspire the creation of ‘Finn’s Law’ to better protect service animals.

Dave shared just how much of a difference the new fencing has already made:

“The difference the fencing has made to the lives of the dogs is almost immeasurable,” said Dave. “When I took over the kennels the previous owners could only manage to get the dogs out for about 20 minutes a day. Now, with the new fencing, they are getting more like 4 hours outside per day over the course of 4 or 5 let outs per day.”

Life-Changing Impact for the Dogs

Dave gave two examples of the transformation now underway at Camelot Kennels. One of the dogs, Jerry-Lee, had been reluctant to leave his kennel. “It turns out that he was just out of practice,” said Dave. “He now spends hours out exploring the paddocks, playing with toys, interacting with the other dogs and volunteers.”

Another dog, Loki, had a heartbreaking start to life. “Loki arrived with us having spent his short young life kept in one of those small green plastic bike boxes on a south London council estate,” Dave explained. “He wouldn’t come out of his kennel for the first 3 weeks… now months on he loves it outside.”

“These are just two examples of many where the new setup has made a huge difference to the dogs’ welfare.”

Major Works Still to Come

Lizzy Brown from German Shepherd Rescue Elite outlined the next stages of work planned at the Callington site:

“The next phase of development includes ensuring the integrity of the external walls of the kennel blocks and replacing the roofs, and carrying out a full electrical rewire… we will then be refurbishing the kennel interiors completely with new partitions, doors and flooring,” she said.

“We will also then be rejigging and upgrading the utility buildings, the kitchen, laundry room, grooming room and office, and finally converting the old cattery into a kind of living room, kitchen area for people, where the volunteers can spend more time with the kennel dogs in an ‘inside’ environment for further enrichment.”

Wire Fence Praises the Work Being Done

Orsi from Wire Fence said they were proud to be involved in such a meaningful cause:

“We’re proud to play a small part in such a meaningful project – we’re glad we could offer this bit of help, and it’s great to see the difference it’s already making for the dogs. A big thank you to Lizzy for reaching out, and to both her and Dave for the amazing work they’re doing at Camelot Kennels. We’re really grateful to be involved and would be more than happy to help again in the future.”
