£1.8 Million Transformation of Camborne’s Park Gerry Moves Closer to Reality
Nearly £1.8 million investment into transforming Camborne’s Park Gerry is on the verge of becoming a reality, and residents are being encouraged to support the final planning application for this ambitious project.
New Life for Park Gerry
If approved, the former Park Road playing fields will be reborn as Park Gerry, featuring a state-of-the-art skate park, sports pitches, a pavilion, and a performance area, all set within a rewilded and newly landscaped environment. This space is designed to cater to people of all ages and interests, from sports enthusiasts to those seeking peace and tranquillity.
The project is a key component of the £23.7 million Town Deal regeneration fund for Camborne. Following the recent signing of the grant funding agreement between Cornwall Council and Camborne Town Council, work on Park Gerry is expected to commence this summer, pending local planning authority approval.
Community-Driven Development
James Ball, Mayor of Camborne, emphasised the community’s role in shaping the project: “We have listened carefully to what people want for their green space. The result is a magnificent and versatile landscape. From football fanatics and, of course, skateboarders, to artists and those seeking some peace and tranquillity, everyone will be able to find a space in which they belong at Park Gerry.”
Val Dalley, Chair of the Camborne Town Deal Board, highlighted the collaborative nature of the project: “Planning Park Gerry’s transformation has truly been a community effort for the enjoyment of residents for many years to come. I am particularly happy with plans for enhanced access to the park, with better cycling and pedestrian access, more parking, accessible pathways and facilities.”
Support from Cornwall Council
Louis Gardner, Cornwall Council Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Economy, praised the progress: “Our role is to support the towns to realise their ambitions for their communities and it’s great to see the plans for Park Gerry have reached this significant milestone.”
In 2021, the government announced £23.7 million in Town Deal funding for Camborne, the largest amount awarded in Cornwall. Park Gerry is one of 11 community-chosen projects aimed at transforming the town and improving the future for its residents.
