Works to enhance the centre of Camborne are due to begin on Monday, 3rd November, bringing a new look to Trelowarren Street and Commercial Square while improving access for pedestrians and cyclists.

The scheme, part of the Camborne Town Deal Transport Project, will be constructed by Cormac and aims to support the local economy by encouraging people to spend more time in the town.

What’s Changing in Camborne

Following community engagement earlier this year, including a drop-in event held in September, the Camborne Renew scheme will focus on improving the town centre’s environment through a range of upgrades:

  • New seating and planted greenery

  • Improved pedestrian crossings throughout Trelowarren Street

  • A new zebra crossing at Fore Street

  • Extended free parking from 30 minutes to an hour at the top of Trelowarren Street

  • Repairs to paving defects in Commercial Square

  • Enhanced lighting and CCTV

  • Secure cycle parking

The improvements will also extend to adjoining streets to complement the wider project.

Supporting the Community During the Works

Val Dalley, Chair of the Camborne Town Deal Board, said:

“I am pleased to see work begin on implementing this vital scheme. The Camborne Renew project is going to make a big difference to our town centre.”

Cllr Dan Rogerson, Cornwall Council portfolio holder for transport, added:

“Making town centres visually appealing, accessible and places everyone enjoys spending time in are all key steps to enhancing their vitality and I look forward to seeing the completed scheme in place.”

To minimise disruption, the works will be phased. Construction will pause at the end of November to allow Camborne’s festive events, including the lantern parade and Christmas lights switch-on, to take place as planned.

There will be no road closures before the New Year except for New Connexion Street, which requires a full closure due to its width.

From January, works will move to Commercial Street and around the town square. These areas will see short-term road closures with diversion routes clearly marked. Pedestrian access will remain open, and deliveries will continue as close to businesses as possible.

To support the local community during restricted vehicle access, one hour of free parking will be available at Rosewarne car park from January until the project’s scheduled completion in May.

Looking Ahead

Construction will continue into the spring, with the road set to be clear for Trevithick Day celebrations. Final surfacing and imprint paving work is expected to be finished by the end of May.

A spokesperson for Cormac said:

“While we understand the importance of keeping the traffic flowing as well as possible at all times during the construction, we also need to ensure the safety of the teams working on site. We recognise that the works will inevitably cause some temporary disruption to motorists, local residents and businesses and will be monitoring the situation closely to keep disruption to a minimum.”

The Camborne Renew and Camborne LifeCycle schemes are two of ten Town Deal funded projects focused on regenerating the town’s heart. Renew has received £2.9 million from the government’s Town Deal programme, plus £800k match funding from Cornwall Council.

The LifeCycle scheme, which is due for completion in mid-November, has been awarded £1.7 million from the Town Deal programme and £326k match funding from Cornwall Council. It will deliver 3.7km of enhanced walking and cycling routes, improving air quality and connecting key areas across Camborne.
