Completion of Camborne Lifecycle Scheme Enhances Walking and Cycling Routes
A new 3.7km network of walking and cycling routes in Camborne has been completed, creating safer and more accessible links between the town centre, residential areas and popular green spaces. The scheme, known as Camborne Lifecycle, has been delivered with funding from Cornwall Council and the Camborne Town Deal programme.
Connecting Camborne with Key Green Spaces
Camborne Lifecycle forms part of the wider Camborne Town Deal Transport Project. The new and improved routes now link the town centre to the Red River Trail, Tehidy Woods, North Cliffs and Godrevy, the Great Flat Lode Mineral Tramways and Tuckingmill Valley Park.
By encouraging people to walk or cycle instead of driving, the network is expected to support healthier lifestyles for those living in or visiting Camborne, while also helping to improve air quality around the town.
The £2 million scheme covers eight separate locations and includes new and improved footways, new pedestrian crossings, extra signage and street lighting. Sections of the tramways have also been cleared and resurfaced to improve safety and accessibility.
Final Works Complete
With the final stage now finished, the Chair of the Camborne Town Deal Board Val Dalley and Camborne Mayor James Ball joined the transport project team, local councillors and Cornwall Council officers to look at the latest improvements. Their visit included the south section of the tramway between North Roskear Road and Roskear Road, where a new footway and streetlights have been installed.
They also stopped at Camborne Cricket Club, where Lifecycle funding supported repairs to a damaged section of the supporting wall next to the tramway.
Val Dalley, Chair of Camborne Town Deal Board, said: “These new walking and cycling routes are already making a big difference in Camborne – not just to residents but to anyone wanting to explore the town and surrounding areas. I’m delighted that the Camborne Lifecycle project is now complete and congratulate everyone involved in bringing it to fruition.”
James Ball, Mayor of Camborne and Cornwall Councillor for Camborne Roskear and Tuckingmill, said “I am pleased to see the completion of the Lifecycle routes, these give residents and visitors an accessible path from the town to the outskirts and our green spaces a direct link to nature. I have already heard many positive comments about the routes and I look forward to using them myself.”
A Long Campaign to Improve the Tramways
Paul White, Cornwall Councillor for Camborne Trelowarren, has been working to secure improvements to the tramways for 12 years. He said: “When I was first elected to Cornwall Council in 2013 one of my first initiatives was to improve the area for everyone. Following many meetings with officers over a number of years, work finally began on the section between Roskear and Roskear Road in 2018.
“Further works were then carried out between Roskear and North Roskear alongside the Cricket Club in 2022, although limited resources meant that the surface was largely gravel rather than tarmac, with work on the final stage from North Roskear road to Boiler Works road delayed for three years to enable knotweed on the site to be treated.
“Now, thanks to the Lifecycle scheme, the whole tramway has been resurfaced and improved with street lights added in all sections. I would like to thank everyone who has worked so hard to help deliver my original vision”.
Repairs Bring Relief to Cricket Club
Reverend Mark Richards, chairman of Camborne Cricket Club, described the repairs to the boundary walls as “a dream come true”.
“A combination of many years of wear and tear, wind and rain had caused a section of our boundary walls to subside. The problem had got to the point where we would not be able to fix it and we had no idea what we were going to do, giving both myself and the treasurer many sleepless nights.
“Then, out of the blue, the wonderful folk from the Town Deal project came along and said they wanted to work with us to repair our walls. It was the answer to all our hopes, dreams and prayers and we couldn’t believe it at first. The work was carried out over the summer and we now have two wonderfully restored archways, with the walls back to how they would have been all those years ago when they were first installed.
“We are over the moon as a cricket club and are incredibly grateful to the Town Deal Board, the transport project team and Cormac for their support”.
Other Improvements Across the Town
Several other upgrades have been delivered as part of the scheme, including:
• Widening the footway on the east side of Rosewarne Road, adding a dropped crossing point with tactile paving, and installing a new streetlight to improve access between Rosewarne car park and the town centre
• A new signalised push button crossing at Roskear near the roundabout outside Tesco
• Clearing and improving the north section of the tramway between North Roskear Road and Boilerworks Road, which had previously been overgrown and impassable
• Better access for pedestrians at the Albert Street, North Parade, Park Road and Roskear Road junction
Part of a Larger Regeneration Effort
Camborne Renew and Camborne Lifecycle are two of ten Town Deal funded schemes focused on transforming the town centre into a more appealing and accessible place to live, work, shop and visit.
Lifecycle received £1.7 million from the government’s Town Deal programme, plus £326,000 of match funding from Cornwall Council. Renew has been awarded £2.9 million from the same programme and £800,000 match funding from Cornwall Council. Work on Renew began in early November and is expected to finish in May.
