The Bolingey Barbarians are still making a difference – one match at a time

A match day collection held during the recent Cornish Pirates versus London Scottish game at the Mennaye Field in Penzance raised an impressive £691.06 for children’s causes across Cornwall.

The sum was collected by the Bolingey Barbarians, a veteran rugby side known for their charity work, with thanks going to the collectors, the Cornish Pirates, and the generosity of the supporters in the crowd.

“A magnificent sum”

Speaking on behalf of the club, Roger Mead B.E.M. said:

“Once again, thank you to all at the Pirates for letting us make a collection at the match.

£691-06 is indeed a magnificent sum and will help make such a difference to so many children in Cornwall.

Please pass on our appreciation to all your generous supporters, who also no doubt enjoyed their win in what was a very enjoyable match.”

Who are the Bolingey Barbarians?

The Bolingey Barbarians were founded in March 1993, following a one-off fundraising game between the Bolingey Inn and Perranporth RFC. The match was such a success that the team decided to form a club, which now plays under the umbrella of Cornwall RFU.

Players can only join by invitation and are usually drawn from other Cornish clubs. While all fixtures are normally held at Perranporth RFC, the side also occasionally travels for ‘away day’ games that celebrate club anniversaries around Cornwall.

Although they originally played against a mix of senior, junior, and veteran sides, the team is now exclusively veteran due to changes in league structures and player availability. They play around five to six matches per season, each one helping to raise money for children in need across the county.

To date, the Barbarians have raised more than £171,000, benefitting over 90 children’s causes in Cornwall.
