Access Cornwall’s Accessible Guide To Cornwall Beaches
Cornwall, known for its breathtaking 300 miles of coastline, is now more accessible to people with disabilities thanks to the launch of a new Accessible Beach Guide for Cornwall by Access Cornwall CIC. This innovative resource promises to transform how individuals with disabilities and their families plan beach outings, offering detailed information on access needs and facilities at various Cornish beaches.
A Comprehensive Resource for Beachgoers
The Accessible Beach Guide for Cornwall has been meticulously researched by the Access Cornwall team, many of whom live with disabilities or care for loved ones with disabilities. The guide is organised by different areas of Cornwall, enabling users to easily identify the beaches that best meet their requirements.
Using a user-friendly, colour-coded traffic light system, the guide rates the accessibility of each beach, helping users quickly pinpoint the most suitable locations. Beyond beach-specific information, the guide also provides useful tips and resources for planning a seamless beach trip, ensuring a worry-free experience.
Making Cornwall’s Beaches Inclusive
Viki Carpenter, director of Access Cornwall, expressed excitement about the new guide: “We are thrilled to introduce the Accessible Beach Guide for Cornwall and take a significant step towards making Cornwall accessible for everyone.”
The guide is a testament to the collaborative efforts in Cornwall, where organisations such as Cornwall Mobility have made strides in improving accessibility, including providing beach chairs. However, Viki emphasised that the guide addresses a critical need for clear and comprehensive information to help those with disabilities plan their beach visits effectively.
Support from The National Lottery
The creation of the Accessible Beach Guide for Cornwall was made possible by a grant from The National Lottery, whose support has had a profound impact on improving accessibility at Cornish beaches.
Viki highlighted the importance of this funding, noting that it has also enabled the purchase of a Hippocampe wheelchair. This specialised wheelchair allows users not only to navigate beaches but also to enter the water, offering an enhanced experience for wheelchair users. Volunteers have been using the Hippocampe to assess accessibility across various beaches, with hopes to make it available for wider loan soon.
