Blind Gamer to Host Fundraising Livestream for iSightCornwall

A blind gamer who went viral for playing using sound alone is set to host a fundraising livestream for a Cornish sight loss charity.

Dominic Hall, known as Dom, has amassed more than 2.5 million views on a TikTok video showing how he plays the popular fighting game Mortal Kombat using audio cues instead of sight.

Now he is turning that online attention into support for iSightCornwall, Cornwall’s sight loss charity, with a special stream on Twitch.

Living With Sight Loss

Dom grew up with very little sight. At the age of three, he was diagnosed with a brain tumour in the central nerve cluster at the front of his brain. It completely destroyed the optic nerve in his right eye and damaged the left, leaving him with only 10 per cent vision.

He adapted to continue gaming, sitting close to televisions, attaching magnifiers to handheld consoles and experimenting with different genres to see what worked.

In 2022, Dom lost the remaining sight in his left eye, leaving him with no usable vision. Despite that, he has continued playing video games and now shares his experiences and tips online. His aim is to show that people with sight loss can still enjoy the hobbies they love and to raise awareness of accessibility in gaming.

Supporting Cornwall’s Oldest Charity

Dom has worked for iSightCornwall for 16 years as an assistive technology adviser. In his role, he demonstrates technology that can make everyday life easier for people with sight loss, from enlarging text on mobile phones to using glasses that can read text aloud and describe surroundings.

He said:

“I’ve been involved with iSightCornwall for many years, first as a volunteer and then as a member of staff, and it fills me with pride every time someone leaves an appointment being able to do something they thought impossible after they lost their sight.

“It’s one of the reasons I’m so passionate about continuing to play video games and showcasing how I do it. Firstly, to inspire other blind or partially sighted people to give it a go but also to highlight to video game developers and fans how important accessibility features are.”

Every penny raised during the livestream will go towards helping someone with sight loss in Cornwall. The charity is marking its 170th anniversary this year, making it the county’s oldest charity. It provides emotional support, help with staying in work or education, aids such as magnifiers and technology, and social opportunities to combat isolation.

Backed by Project Management Challenge

The livestream will feature new elements after iSightCornwall was selected by a Plymouth based team from Babcock International Group as their charity partner for the Association for Project Management Challenge Award.

The APM Project Management Challenge is an annual competition that has been running for more than a decade. Teams from regional networks conceptualise, plan and deliver a project from start to finish.

The Babcock team has been working behind the scenes to help Dom and the charity improve the professionalism of the stream and boost audience engagement.

A spokesperson from the Babcock team said: “We’re so excited about the partnership and working with iSightCornwall to help raise money for people with sight loss!”

Carole Theobald, Chief Executive of iSightCornwall, said:

“We were delighted to be selected by the team at Babcock to benefit from their Project Management Challenge Award entry. iSightCornwall is almost entirely funded by community and individual donations so we’re always looking for new ways to fundraise and engage with new people.

“Streaming and fundraising online as part of a Gaming for Good campaign is a fresh and exciting way of spreading awareness of what we do and of raising vital funds and it’s been great working alongside Babcock to help grow and improve the channel.”

How To Watch

Dom’s fundraising livestream will take place from 5pm to 7pm on Friday, 13 February.
