Brothers Run the Entire Length of the UK for Cancer Research UK – Ending at Land’s End
Social media stars Lambros Army have become the first brothers to run the entire length of the United Kingdom together for Cancer Research UK, arriving at Land’s End on Friday 29th August.
Australians Stefan and Lachlan Lamble covered more than 1,000 miles from John O’Groats in just 35 days, completing 38 ultra-marathons. Along the way they faced storms, heatwaves, injuries, road closures and even a foot infection.
A gruelling final push
Only six days before the finish, Lachlan needed urgent hospital treatment for his foot. That left the pair with a punishing final stretch: 73km in one day with 1,000m of elevation. Starting at 3am, the brothers reached Land’s End at 5.28pm, spurred on by messages from people affected by cancer.
Stefan, 26, said:
“We lost one of our grandmothers to breast cancer and have one grandma who’s been treated for thyroid cancer so we know how important it is to fund research. It was so surreal running into Lands End for our family and for everyone who’s been impacted by cancer and we’re so grateful for everyone’s support along the way.”
Running for something bigger
The challenge has so far raised over £46,000 for Cancer Research UK. Reflecting on the journey, Lachlan, 24, said:
“We are running for a cause that is so much bigger than us and it’s the people who have been donating that are making a difference.
“It’s been the toughest challenge we’ve ever done physically and mentally but there are people out there right now who are having it a lot tougher than us — people in hospital beds fighting for their lives. We’re lucky we’ve got two legs and we can run.
“We’re not elite athletes, we’re just idiots with poor haircuts who run to try to help people with cancer. Even if we only save one life, it will all have been worth it.”
From Australia to the UK
Last year, Stefan and Lachlan became the first brothers to run across Australia, raising A$249,000 for cancer patients. Their latest UK challenge has already been seen by millions online.
The pair, who go by @lambrosarmy, had 700,000 followers before setting off. Since leaving John O’Groats, their videos have reached 120 million people and they have gained nearly half a million new followers. For every new follower, they pledged to donate a penny to Cancer Research UK, proudly adding £4,286 to their fundraising total.
Hills, heat and family support
The UK run proved tougher than their Australian challenge, with far more elevation. Stefan explained:
“We’ve had much more ground to cover in a much shorter time. In the UK we’ve been doing about 48km (30 miles) a day compared to 40km (25 miles) in Australia. The other big thing is elevation.
“We’d never been to the UK before but to prepare ourselves for the hills, six months ago we moved to the Dandenong Ranges — extreme mountains near Melbourne — to train and acclimatise ourselves. Australia is so flat, the elevation is about 50m a day whereas in the UK, I think it’s over 500m a day. We’ve been running up and down Mount Dandenong all day!”
This time, their mum Deborah, 57, joined them on the road in a motorhome named Gary 0.2, providing meals and much-needed care along the way.
Cancer Research UK’s response
Sharon Baldwin, fundraising manager for Cancer Research UK, said:
“We’re in awe of the project Stefan and Lachlan took on. It was a huge emotional and physical challenge, driven by their own family experience of the pain and uncertainty of cancer.
“The brothers have big hearts and are enormous fun and we’re grateful to them for completing over 1,000 miles in all weathers over the past five weeks. Every step they’ve taken and every penny raised will help Cancer Research UK advance on the path to finding new, better and kinder treatments for all 200 types of cancer.”
How to donate
People can continue to donate via the brothers’ social channels @lambrosarmy or directly through Givestar.
