Team Effort Across Cornwall Pools

Last week, staff from BBC Radio Cornwall took the plunge at Helston Sports Centre, Saltash Leisure Centre, and St Austell Leisure Centre, all as part of a 1,000-Mile Challenge in support of BBC Children in Need. Each participant contributed to the collective goal, with the final total adding up to an impressive 24 miles. Local hero Pudsey joined in, lending his support, and cheering on both the swimmers and the crowd that gathered to witness the feat.

The daily swims were hosted by GLL, a charitable social enterprise that manages the three leisure centres. St Austell Leisure Centre became the setting for a special live broadcast, where a four-hour breakfast programme brought listeners into the heart of the action on the final day.

Cheers, Community Spirit, and a Little Competition

Amelia Kitchen, Senior General Manager at GLL, expressed the centre’s enthusiasm in supporting the Radio Cornwall team. “We’re always happy to help if we can and heartily congratulate the Radio Cornwall team on their impressive achievement,” Amelia said. Pudsey joined in on the fun, exploring the newly upgraded gym equipment at each centre – even trying some of it himself.

BBC producer Victoria Gould shared her gratitude for the warm welcome at each venue. “It’s been a total treat to witness the sense of community at all your pools and to learn more about how much they mean to those they serve,” she said. “We have met some fabulous people and heard some brilliant and inspiring stories all whilst doing our bit for BBC Children in Need.”

Regular early-morning swimmer Pat, who attends St Austell Leisure Centre, spoke to presenter James Churchfield about how daily swimming helps her arthritis. “Being active really makes a difference,” Pat shared.

A Broadcast from the Pool

The grand finale was marked by a memorable broadcast moment as James hosted the last half-hour of the morning’s breakfast programme from within the pool. Victoria praised the camaraderie shown by everyone involved, adding, “The highlight was undoubtedly James presenting the last half an hour of this morning’s breakfast programme whilst in the water!”
