First cohort completes first month of 16-week software development bootcamp

The first group of aspiring software developers have just completed their first month of an intensive 16-week bootcamp at Headforwards Digital Academy. The programme, which began on 2 September, is designed to transform 24 students from coding novices into junior software developers.

Delivered in partnership with Code Institute, the Full Stack Software Development Skills Bootcamp is part of Headforwards Digital Academy’s initiative to address the digital skills gap in the local job market. The academy, founded by technology partner Headforwards, aims to equip individuals and businesses with the skills needed to thrive in the tech industry.

Aiming to Close the Digital Skills Gap

The bootcamp, which was over-subscribed with 89 applications for just 24 part and fully funded places, is part of the broader Digital Futures initiative. This initiative has received £2 million from Cornwall Council through the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Good Growth Programme, which is funded by the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund.

Louis Gardner, Cornwall Council’s portfolio holder for economy, highlighted the importance of such programmes: “Research shows us that there is an increased demand for tech and digital skills and we understand the importance of creating a pipeline of talent.”

Rigorous Selection Process

Before starting the course, participants were tested with a five-day coding challenge from Code Institute, which introduced them to the basics of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Applicants also wrote personal statements and underwent interviews to ensure their commitment and suitability for the programme.

Kelly Kingstone, Director for the Digital Academy, expressed her excitement about the diverse group of learners: “This programme is such a fantastic opportunity for anyone looking to change career, get started in tech, or take their technical skills to the next level.”

Intensive Training for Real-World Skills

Over the next few months, the cohort will engage in a rigorous schedule of classes, running from 9am to 5pm, five days a week. In addition to technical training, the programme focuses on job-ready skills such as Agile team management, collaborative pair programming, and verbal presentation skills. Students will also receive immersive career coaching to help them succeed in the workplace.

Jane Gormley, Code Institute’s Director of Employer Engagement, praised the collaboration with Headforwards: “We’re eager to support this cohort on their skills journey and into further employment opportunities with the Headforwards team.”

Looking Ahead: Next Bootcamp Begins in January

Applications are now open for the next Software Development Bootcamp, set to begin in January 2024. The academy is also offering additional training and upskilling opportunities for businesses looking to enhance their workforce’s digital skills.
