Adoption services for Cornwall Council and the Isles of Scilly, will join Adopt South West starting from April 1, 2024.

This inclusion broadens the regional coverage of Adopt South West, adding to its existing service areas of Devon, Plymouth, Torbay, and Somerset. Established in 2018, Adopt South West emerged in response to the government’s push for the creation of Regional Adoption Agencies (RAAs), which aim to streamline and enhance the adoption process.

Expanding Horizons for Adoption

Adopt South West, since its foundation, has sought to revolutionise adoption services by combining resources and expertise from neighbouring authorities. The main goals of RAAs like Adopt South West include accelerating the recruitment of adopters, facilitating quicker placement of children into their forever homes, and offering comprehensive support services across the region. With the inclusion of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, the agency is poised to make an even greater impact.

Smooth Transition, Familiar Faces

The transition for Cornwall’s adoption services into Adopt South West has been meticulously planned to ensure continuity and support for adoptive families. A significant number of Cornwall Council’s adoption team members are joining the regional agency, ensuring that families continue to receive support from familiar faces.

Local and Regional Leaders’ Insights

She highlighted Cornwall’s exceptional record in adoption services and voiced confidence that joining Adopt South West will only improve the adoption experience and outcomes for children and prospective adopters in Cornwall. She pointed to the benefits of pooling resources and expertise from five local authorities, which is expected to expedite adoption procedures and facilitate better matches between children and adoptive families, all while offering better value for Cornish residents.

Amanda, the Interim Head of Adopt South West, warmly welcomed new colleagues and families to the agency. She reassured everyone involved in the adoption process that efforts are being made to maintain continuity, with the added advantage of being supported by an expanded team of professionals. Amanda highlighted that the inclusion of Cornwall’s services will increase the pool of regional prospective adopters, improving the chances of finding suitable homes for children across the region.
