Education Experts Share Advice on Mobile Phones in Schools Amid Legal Campaign

Published On: 22 July 2025Last Updated: 22 July 2025By

As debate heats up over whether smartphones should be banned in schools across England, education training specialists at High Speed Training have stepped forward to offer support for parents and teachers navigating the issue.

The growing conversation follows a campaign led by two fathers, Will Orr-Ewing and Pete Montgomery, who are planning legal action to ban smartphones from all schools in England. They've raised concerns around cyberbullying, mental health, and access to inappropriate content, calling for stricter rules on phone use during the school day.

A Call for a National Ban

The campaign is gaining traction, with several headteachers and parent groups backing the idea of smartphone-free schools. But while many agree that phones can be a source of distraction and online harm, not everyone supports a total ban.

The UK Government has already issued guidance recommending schools prohibit mobile phones in classrooms, citing the risks of exploitation, excessive screen time and bullying.

Balancing Risks With Real-World Needs

Dr. Richard Anderson, Head of Learning & Development at High Speed Training, explained:

"The question of whether to ban mobile phones in schools is a complex issue, and it's clear there's no one-size-fits-all solution. While the risks associated with smartphone use are significant, a total ban could overlook key benefits like emergency communication, the development of digital literacy, and the opportunity to use phones as valuable learning tools."

Dr. Anderson highlighted that schools should consider the needs of children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), those with medical conditions such as diabetes, and young carers who may need to stay in contact with family.

"Any policy must be implemented with compassion, allowing schools the autonomy to make crucial exceptions for students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), young carers, or those who rely on a device for medical reasons. Ultimately, a successful policy isn't just about banning devices; it's about creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment for every single child."
