Published On: 6 February 2026Last Updated: 6 February 2026By

Helston is set for a day of free film screenings and hands on animation workshops this half term as Animate Helston comes to The Parade on Tuesday 18th February.

The event features three animated films shown throughout the day, alongside family friendly workshops inspired by Cornish myths and legends.

Free Film Screenings

The morning begins at 10am with The Amazing Maurice, directed by Toby Genkel and Florian Westermann. The film follows Maurice, a streetwise cat who travels from town to town running a rat scam with the help of a young boy named Keith and a group of unusually intelligent rats. The screening is rated U and takes place at The Parade, Helston TR13 8RT.

At 12pm, audiences aged 12 and over can watch Howl’s Moving Castle, directed by Hayao Miyazaki. Produced by Studio Ghibli, the film tells the story of Sophie, a young hat maker who is cursed by the Witch of the Waste and transformed into an old woman. Her journey leads her to the magical moving castle of the wizard Howl, set against a backdrop of a country preparing for war.

The final screening of the day starts at 2.15pm with The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, directed by Mamoru Hosoda. The story follows teenage schoolgirl Makoto, who gains the ability to jump backwards through time after narrowly avoiding a fatal accident, and explores the consequences of altering the past. This screening is also rated 12.

All three films are free to attend and take place at The Parade in Helston.

Free Animation Workshops

Alongside the screenings, families can take part in a free 90 minute stop motion animation workshop inspired by Cornish folklore. Participants will work with ready made cut out puppets and learn animation techniques, sequencing and sound, finishing the session with their own completed mini film.

The workshops are led by celebrated professional animator Sarah Beeby and include all materials.

Sessions run at 10.30am and 1pm on Tuesday 18th February, again at The Parade, Helston TR13 8RT.
