A calm alternative for children who don’t thrive in noisy summer clubs

A series of free, gentle workshops is being offered in Cornwall this August for children aged 8 to 12 who are naturally quiet, shy, or feel anxious in social situations.

Organised by Quiet Connections, the “Quiet Creations” sessions are described as calm, welcoming spaces designed especially for quieter young people. Children will be invited to explore working with air-dry clay at their own pace, alongside others who also prefer peaceful, creative activities.

With only eight spaces available at each workshop, the sessions are aimed at children who might hesitate before joining in, feel overwhelmed in busy groups, or simply prefer quieter environments.

“Quietness is welcomed, not judged”

Hayley Stanton, Founder of Quiet Connections CIC, said:
“Some children are just naturally quieter. They take their time, feel things deeply, prefer to watch before they join in, and sometimes need more reassurance. But these gentle children are so often overlooked or expected to be louder to fit in. That’s why we’ve created these workshops; calm, inclusive spaces where quietness is welcomed, not judged. We want quiet children to feel seen and valued, just as they are.”

The workshops are fully funded and take place at accessible, child-friendly venues across South West Cornwall:

  • Redruth – Krowji Art Room, Monday 18th August, 2:00–4:00pm

  • Penzance – Trelya’s Rainbow Room, Wednesday 20th August, 1:30–3:30pm

  • Helston – CAST Learning Studio, Tuesday 26th August, 2:00–4:00pm

Led by local artists in safe, supportive settings

Each session will be led by local artist and socially engaged practitioner Emma Saffy Wilson, alongside Quiet Connections’ Youth Programme Coordinator, Owen Skerritt.

Together, Emma and Owen create spaces where children can take part in a way that feels right for them. There is no pressure to speak or perform — just gentle guidance, creative freedom, and quiet encouragement.

Children will be free to follow their own ideas using clay and other tools. Light refreshments will be provided, and comfy clothes are recommended, as things can get a bit messy.

Owen Skerritt said:
“Learning to find your own balance as a quiet person engaging with a loud world can be challenging — especially for young people. These kinds of intentional quiet spaces help children recognise their quiet nature and build confidence as their true, authentic selves.”
