Local Primary School’s Beekeeping Club Buzzes to New Heights with Support from South West Water
In Launceston, a local primary school has set a remarkable example of environmental education through its Bee Club, which has recently received a significant boost thanks to the support from South West Water.
The St. Catherine’s Bee Club, a pioneering club devoted to teaching young students the art and science of beekeeping, was initiated in May 2022. The club, which started with two established bee colonies acquired from the local Launceston Beekeepers Group, has been a weekly haven for Year 5 and 6 pupils eager to learn about the intricacies of bee husbandry.
Under the guidance of their mentors, the children in the Bee Club have transformed into young beekeepers, taking on the responsibility of maintaining and caring for their working hives. This hands-on experience not only educates them on the critical role bees play in our environment but also underscores the importance of conservation efforts.
With the recent backing from South West Water’s Neighbourhood Fund, the school is set to enhance the Bee Club’s facilities and resources significantly. The fund will provide for new hives, microscopes, honey extraction equipment, and educational books. Additionally, a new garden full of bee-friendly flowers will be planted, offering the perfect environment for bees to thrive and for children to observe and learn from.
Jo, the School Secretary of St. Catherine’s School, expressed the community’s gratitude towards South West Water and its Neighbourhood Fund. The Bee Club members are eagerly anticipating the arrival of the new equipment and the opportunities it will bring to further their learning and care for their hives.
The Bee Club’s ambitions don’t stop at bee husbandry; there are plans for some of the club members to pursue their Junior Beekeeping Certificate from the British Beekeeping Association this year, a testament to the club’s dedication to fostering a deep understanding and respect for beekeeping among its young participants.
Laura, Chief Customer and Digital Officer at South West Water, highlighted the company’s commitment to supporting innovative projects that benefit the community and the environment. The Bee Club at St. Catherine’s Primary School exemplifies such a project, promoting environmental awareness and engagement among young students.
Since its inception in 2021, South West Water’s Neighbourhood Fund has collaborated with local community groups and charities to support activities and initiatives that focus on education, health, wellbeing, and positive environmental outcomes. The Bee Club at St. Catherine’s School is a shining example of how community support can foster significant educational and environmental benefits, inspiring students to become the environmental stewards of tomorrow.
