New Trailer Rolls Into Cornwall Farm – But It’s Not for Hay Bales
Education on Wheels at Cornhill Farm
A farm in West Cornwall is gearing up to welcome even more schoolchildren and community groups thanks to a new covered trailer – designed not for hauling crops, but for carrying curious minds.
Pete and Jenny Olds, who run the 200-acre mixed Cornhill Farm, have introduced a new personnel trailer to support their growing rural education programme. With disabled access and space for an entire class, the trailer will enable them to double their current visitor numbers, which have already surpassed 1,000 in 2024.
“The Children of Today Are Our Future Farmers”
“Having two young children ourselves, we are passionate about ‘doing our bit’ for farm education,” said Jenny Olds. “The children of today are our farmers, environmentalists, customers and policy makers of the future, so we try to offer as many school visits on farm as possible.
“The new trailer allows us to show more visitors more of the farm and enables them to take part in activities such as pond dipping, collecting the eggs and meeting our animals. And importantly, the trailer’s wheelchair access means students with additional needs can join their classmates on every aspect of the visit.”
Pete and Jenny also plan to lend the trailer to other farms across Cornwall that want to host free educational visits, making it a shared resource for rural learning.
Backed by Local Support
The trailer was part-funded by Cornish Mutual, a farming insurance company focused on supporting agriculture and rural life across the South West. Further funding came from Cornwall Council’s Growth Hub Grant Programme, the Dartington Cattle Breeding Trust, and local sponsors including HLH Hutchinsons, Lodge & Thomas, and Boscrowan Holiday Cottages.
Peter Beaumont, Chief Executive Officer at Cornish Mutual, said: “Protecting the rural community by showing more people the importance of farming in the region is central to what we do at Cornish Mutual.
“Peter and Jenny already play a vital role in bringing young people to the farm, and we’re delighted to help fund their efforts in taking this to the next level. It forms another part of our commitment to young people and the next generation of South West farmers, adding to our support for local Young Farmers’ Clubs and the bursaries we award each year to those studying agriculture in our region.”
With the new trailer in tow, Cornhill Farm is set to become an even more accessible and engaging destination for rural learning in Cornwall.
