Oakwood Learners Take Part in National Specialist FE Awareness Week
Learners at Oakwood Specialist College have been in the spotlight as part of The Power of Specialist FE Awareness Week, a national campaign celebrating how specialist further education supports young people with complex needs.
A Week Showcasing Specialist FE Across the Country
The awareness week, led by Natspec, ran from 1st to 5th December and brought together colleges across the UK to highlight the impact of specialist provision for 16 to 25 year olds with special educational needs and disabilities.
Oakwood Welcomes Community Leaders
At Oakwood, learners welcomed town mayors, councillors and community representatives to their campuses and shared their work and experiences. In Torpoint, learners even interviewed visitors for their podcast, offering a first hand look at life at the college.
Principal Esther Williams said:
“Oakwood is a place where young people achieve amazing things, supported by a dedicated team. We celebrate diversity and ensure learners enjoy positive opportunities that prepare them for their next steps.”
Learners Share Their Experiences
Learners described what the college means to them.
Cole said: “I like college because it gives me freedom and understanding staff.”
Riley said: “College helps me smile, be happier, and develop independence.”
National Perspective from Natspec
Clare Howard, Chief Executive of Natspec, said:
“Specialist FE is about unlocking potential and creating positive futures. Our colleges give young people the skills, confidence and independence they need to succeed.”
Spotlight on Specialist Education
Oakwood Specialist College provides tailored programmes for learners with autism, learning difficulties and complex needs, with a focus on independence, communication, employability and life skills. Its involvement in the national campaign highlights how specialist FE transforms lives and calls for greater recognition in national policy.
