Over 97% of Cornwall’s Children Win First Choice Primary School

In an impressive showcase of educational placement, Cornwall has reported that over 97% of children starting primary school this September have been allocated their first preference.

The announcement, which will delight many parents across the region, marks an increase from last year’s figures and exceeds the national average significantly.

Record-Breaking Placement Rates

Cornwall Council revealed that out of 4,830 applications for reception places, a staggering 4,715 children will attend the school they preferred most. This figure translates to 97.62%, a notable rise from 95.82% in the previous year. This rate is also considerably higher than the national average of 92.5% reported last year.

High Satisfaction Across the Board

The good news extends beyond the first preferences. This year, virtually every applicant (99.83%) received a spot at either their first, second, or third choice school, an improvement from 98.99% last year.

Barbara, the Cabinet Member for Children and Families at the Council, expressed her satisfaction with these outcomes, attributing them to the diligent efforts of the Council’s team and their cooperation with schools across the county.

“It’s fantastic that so many children and families have been offered their first preference primary school for this September,” Barbara said. She also extended her gratitude to all individuals involved in the process for their hard work.

Guidance for the Disappointed Few

Despite the high rate of satisfaction, there remains a small fraction of families who did not receive their preferred placement. The Council has advised these families that there is an independent appeals process available, details of which can be found on the Cornwall Council website’s school appeals page.

Preparing for the Big Day

For families preparing for the start of the school year, Cornwall Council recommends visiting their ‘Starting School Checklist‘ on the Care and Support in Cornwall website. This resource provides valuable advice and information to ensure children are ready for this significant step.

As September approaches, the Council continues to work closely with local schools to facilitate smooth transitions for all students and maintain the high standards of placement success seen this year.

This achievement not only highlights the effectiveness of Cornwall’s educational administration but also promises an optimistic start to the academic journeys of the region’s youngest learners.
