Penwith College’s Construction Students Transform Unused Space into a Community Haven

In a display of skill and creativity, the construction department at Penwith College has successfully transformed what was once a neglected and unused area into a vibrant and fully furnished seating zone, showcasing the practical talents of its students.

This inspiring project began with the college’s ambitious students sketching out various designs, aiming to unlock the full potential of the previously overlooked space. These initial concepts were then presented to Jewson, a renowned building materials company, which played a pivotal role in selecting the final design.

The carpentry students of Penwith College, undeterred by the challenges, rolled up their sleeves and embarked on the practical phase of the project. They collaborated closely with Jewson, ensuring they had the right materials to bring their vision to life. However, the collaboration didn’t stop there. In a commendable display of teamwork and interdisciplinary learning, the carpentry students joined forces with their peers from the Bricklaying department. Together, they skillfully installed a paved patio floor, a testament to their combined expertise.

The newly revamped area now boasts comfortable seating, a tastefully paved patio, and a section of artificial grass, all enclosed by aesthetically pleasing wooden fencing. This transformation not only enhances the college’s physical environment but also serves as a practical demonstration of the student’s capabilities.

The project also highlights the college’s ongoing and fruitful partnership with Jewson. This unique collaboration offers more than just material support; it opens avenues for expert guidance, engaging educational trips, and exciting career development opportunities for the students.

Penwith College’s commitment to hands-on learning and industry partnerships is evident in this project. It not only provides students with real-world experience but also contributes to the local community by revitalising unused spaces.

The college is excited to showcase this project and its comprehensive construction courses at the upcoming Open Evening on Thursday, 25th January, from 5 pm to 8 pm. The event promises to be an eye-opener for aspiring students, offering masterclasses in various construction trades, including Painting & Decorating, Carpentry, and Bricklaying.

For those interested in exploring a career in construction or witnessing firsthand the students’ craftsmanship, Penwith College encourages you to book your spot for the Open Evening at their website.
