Police Launch Poster Competition to Combat Speeding

In an approach to address speeding concerns near Trannack School, the Falmouth & Helston Neighbourhood Policing Team, in collaboration with Lowertown Community Group and Trannack School, has launched a poster competition. This initiative, part of the Neighbourhood Policing Week, aims to engage local school children in creating speed awareness messages.

Michelle Le Lacheur, a member of the Lowertown Community Group, reached out to the local policing team about the speeding issue, especially following reports of near misses outside the school. In response, Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) Julia Berry, alongside Michelle Le Lacheur, visited Trannack School on January 24th to deliver a road safety assembly. They educated the pupils about staying safe on roads and encouraged them to participate in the competition to design a speed awareness poster.

The competition, a joint effort between the school and community group, will result in the winning poster design being transformed into road signs. These signs will be strategically placed to deter speeding in the vicinity of the school. Michelle Le Lacheur expressed gratitude for the opportunity to launch this community-led competition, emphasising the group’s commitment to promoting safer speeds around Trannack School.

Adam Boyes, Head of Trannack School, welcomed this initiative, highlighting the importance of road safety for the school community. He thanked the Lowertown Community Group and Devon & Cornwall Police for their efforts to enhance safety around the school.

Children have a week to submit their poster designs, with PCSO Berry and Michelle Le Lacheur scheduled to return on February 2nd to announce the competition winner.

PCSO Berry, reflecting on the road safety assembly, praised the children’s enthusiasm and interaction. She is looking forward to judging the competition with Michelle.

Addressing the broader concerns of speeding in the area, Devon & Cornwall Police are arranging for a Speed Detection Officer from the Devon & Cornwall Safety Camera Partnership to patrol the area. Additionally, PCSO Berry plans to attend the next Lowertown Community Group meeting to help set up a Community Speed Watch group.

The initiative falls within Neighbourhood Policing Week, a national event from January 22nd to January 26th, 2024, celebrating the daily efforts of Neighbourhood Policing Teams across the country. However, these teams remain committed to supporting their communities beyond this designated week.
