Thousands of Young Readers Embrace Cornwall’s 2024 Summer Reading Challenge
Over 8,400 Children Across Cornwall Take Part in Inspiring Reading Events
This summer, more than 8,400 children across Cornwall delved into a world of stories and creativity by participating in The Reading Agency’s 2024 Summer Reading Challenge. The challenge, hosted by libraries throughout the Duchy, encouraged young readers to discover new books and engage in creative activities over the school holidays.
Libraries Bring “Marvellous Makers” Theme to Life
Under this year’s theme, Marvellous Makers, Cornwall’s libraries became centres of excitement, hosting unique events to ignite children’s imaginations. Penzance Library invited Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service for a special story-time session, while at Helston Library, children got hands-on with rocket launching, thanks to support from Newquay Space Port.
Cornwall’s libraries provided a welcoming and inspiring space for families, offering resources designed to foster a love for reading in children. According to Cornwall Council, 67% of the children who signed up completed the challenge, reflecting widespread enthusiasm for reading.
“Fantastic to See the Excitement for Reading Across the County”
Carol Mould, Cornwall Council’s portfolio holder for Neighbourhoods, expressed her delight at the high level of participation. “We are thrilled that so many children took part in this year’s challenge,” Carol said. “Not only does this challenge help children discover the joy of reading, it also gives them the chance to explore their local library and see the books and activities that are available all year round. It’s fantastic to see the excitement for reading across the county, and the libraries look forward to continuing to support children on their learning journeys.”
