#ClimateScam? Hairdresser Turns Investigator in New Film Tackling Climate Misinformation
A new documentary, #ClimateScam?, is set to hit cinemas across Plymouth and Cornwall later this month, delving into the world of climate misinformation and the conspiracy theories that fuel it.
A Hairdresser’s Journey into the Climate Debate
Jaz Njie, a mobile hairdresser and tech-savvy Gen Z-er, has swapped scissors for a microphone in her quest to understand why some people remain convinced that climate change is a hoax. Produced by award-winning charity Cornwall Climate Care, the film takes viewers on a thought-provoking journey, examining the human stories behind the headlines.
Jaz’s day job sees her visiting people’s homes to provide hairdressing services, but this time, she’s visiting climate scientists, sceptics, and activists to uncover the real reasons behind the polarising views on climate change.
“A lot of people my age get most of their information from TikTok and YouTube, and I know plenty of people who believe all sorts of conspiracy theories,” said Jaz. “Being involved in this film has really opened my eyes to why misinformation is such a problem – and it’s been scary to understand what a big impact it can really have.”
Conversations Across the Divide
According to the film’s producer, Claire Wallerstein, Jaz’s skills as a hairdresser proved invaluable in the documentary. “Hairdressers have a knack for chatting to everyone from all walks of life – and Jaz has used this skill brilliantly in her conversations with people on all sides of what has become such a polarising subject.”
Jaz added: “Lots of people have lost trust in politicians to tell the truth or act in our best interests, so you can kind of understand why people feel attracted to conspiracy theories about all sorts of things. But what really hit home with me was meeting the scientists and seeing how frustrated they are at the lack of action on climate change – because they are the ones researching what is really going on.”
The Impact of Climate Misinformation
With the COP29 international climate talks just weeks away, the film arrives at a critical time. Despite the urgency of the climate crisis, misinformation and conspiracy theories continue to confuse the public, leaving many unsure of what to believe.
Climate change is one of the most studied phenomena in science, with over 99% of studies agreeing it is predominantly caused by humans burning fossil fuels. Yet a recent study revealed that one-third of young people in the UK now believe the threat of climate change has been over-exaggerated.
