Urgent Safety Warning Issued After Cliff Collapse at Porthtowan Beach

Published On: 12 February 2024Last Updated: 12 February 2024By

St Agnes Coastguard Search & Rescue Team has reported a substantial cliff fall at Porthtowan beach, urging the public to exercise extreme caution. The incident, designated as Call Out #4, occurred on Monday, 12th February 2024, at 13:49.

Responding promptly to the situation, the rescue team has cordoned off the cliff path above the site of the collapse to prevent access and mitigate the risk of accidents. In light of the instability of the cliff, officials are advising beachgoers and the public to maintain a safe distance from the affected area, specifically recommending that individuals stay at least as far away from the cliff as it is high. For example, if the cliff is 20 metres tall, a minimum distance of 20 metres should be observed.

The Coastguard’s warning emphasises the precarious condition of the cliff, indicating that it is very unstable and suggesting the possibility of further collapses in the coming days or weeks. The community is strongly advised to heed these warnings and avoid the area on Porthtowan beach to ensure their safety.

In the event of witnessing a cliff fall or suspecting that someone has been injured as a result, the public is urged to call emergency services immediately by dialing 999. The Coastguard also warns against exploring or approaching recent cliff falls due to the high risk of additional collapses.

The safety of beach users and the general public remains a top priority for the St Agnes Coastguard Search & Rescue Team, as they continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.
