Duck Race Without a River? Oddfellows Friendship Groups in Redruth and Truro Have a Quacking Time!
Oddfellows Friendship Groups in Redruth and Truro enjoyed a duck race with a difference this February – without a single river or pond in sight!
Tabletop Duck Racing Brings Laughter and Friendly Competition
Instead of floating downstream, the ducks in this unique race made their way along a tabletop course, moving forward at the turn of a card. Each duck had its own quirky name and set of odds, adding to the excitement as supporters cheered them on. At the end of each set of races, the supporter with the highest score won a selection pack of biscuits.
The event wasn’t just about racing, though. Attendees enjoyed a spread of teas, coffees, chocolate biscuits, cakes, and fruit before catching up on important welfare updates.
Welfare Support and Prizes Up for Grabs
The welfare update included useful advice on avoiding online and telephone scams, reminders about available dental and optical support grants, and details on accessing the members’ advice line and legal support. A prize raffle also took place, with proceeds going towards local charitable causes. Attendees could also join the free book club and take home puzzle sheets to enjoy later.
Upcoming Event: The Story Behind Cornwall’s Place Names
Looking ahead to March, Oddfellows Friendship Groups in Redruth and Truro will be welcoming guest speakers from the Redruth Antiquarians for an illustrated talk titled ‘A Kernow-copia of Cornish Placenames’. The talk will explore the history and meanings behind Cornwall’s town and village names, promising an insightful session for all attendees.
