Mike Read Appointed Patron of Saving Our Sarah CIC
Saving Our Sarah CIC has announced that broadcaster, author, and television presenter Mike Read has become Patron of the community interest company, marking what they describe as a significant milestone in their campaign to restore the Sarah Townsend Porritt, a Watson-class RNLI lifeboat from the 1950s.
Preserving a Lifesaving Legacy
The Sarah Townsend Porritt served with distinction, saving over 40 lives during her operational career. Now approaching her 75th anniversary, the campaign is focused on securing a permanent and suitable restoration space to safeguard the vessel for future generations.
Mike has long been committed to preserving cultural and historical heritage, having worked on numerous projects celebrating British history and music. His involvement is expected to help raise awareness, attract partners, and galvanise community support for the restoration.
Commenting on his new role, Mike said:
“I am privileged to lend my support to Saving Our Sarah. Preserving vessels such as the Sarah Townsend Porritt is vital to honouring the legacy and sacrifices of those who served our coastal communities.”
Founder Chris Freer said:
“We are delighted to welcome Mr. Read as Patron. His distinguished career and passion for heritage provide invaluable endorsement for our mission. His support will inspire volunteers and stakeholders alike as we work towards the successful restoration of this iconic lifeboat.”
More Than a Restoration Project
Saving Our Sarah CIC aims to unite communities through the restoration of the Sarah Townsend Porritt, bridging the generational gap by connecting older individuals with younger generations to pass on traditional boatbuilding skills and maritime knowledge.
The group works closely with maritime partners, promotes heritage through education and fundraising, and hosts interactive events such as webinars and crowdfunding opportunities. They believe heritage projects like this can foster pride, improve community wellbeing, and encourage physical activity.
Committed to Sustainability
Environmental sustainability is a core value for the CIC. The restoration will use recycled and low carbon materials, timber from FSC-certified sources, and local suppliers. Waste will be recycled wherever possible, biodiversity will be promoted around the vessel, and eco-friendly travel will be encouraged for volunteers and trades.
