Lost Heroine of Cornwall? Discover the Legacy of Emily Hobhouse
165 Years Since the Birth of a Forgotten Humanitarian
April 9th marks 165 years since the birth of Emily Hobhouse, a remarkable Cornish woman whose name has been largely forgotten in British history. Born in 1860, Emily defied the strict social norms of the Victorian era and embarked on a courageous solo journey to South Africa, where she worked tirelessly to improve the lives of women and children suffering in concentration camps during the Second Anglo-Boer War (1899–1902).
A true humanitarian, Emily challenged convention and made history through her fearless advocacy – an extraordinary legacy that remains as powerful today as it was over a century ago.
A Unique Experience in Cornwall
Now, a new immersive experience in St Ive, Cornwall, is bringing Emily’s story back to life. The Story of Emily offers visitors a chance to step into the world of this pioneering woman, with a journey through her childhood home, The Victorian Rectory, and an immersive exhibition in The War Rooms.
The War Rooms feature original artefacts, 3-D installations, and virtual reality elements, transporting visitors into Emily’s world and the struggles she sought to change.
