Cornish Language Weekend to Take Place in Truro This April
A Cornish language weekend organised by Kowethas an Yeth Kernewek is set to take place this spring, bringing together speakers and learners from across Cornwall and beyond.
Cornish language weekend dates confirmed
The annual Pennseythen Gernewek will run from Friday 17th to Sunday 19th April 2026. The event is held every spring and is designed to give people the chance to use Cornish in a friendly, relaxed and stress free setting.
The weekend welcomes people at all stages of their Cornish language journey, from complete beginners to fluent speakers.
What’s planned over the weekend
Sessions this year will include a mix of workshops, lectures and traditional style lessons. Alongside these, there will be more practical activities such as creative writing, crafts using Cornish and drama.
A two day intensive course for beginners or near beginners will run on the Friday and Saturday, with a focus on spoken Cornish. Those taking part will then have opportunities to practise their new skills during evening activities and on the Sunday.
Venue and evening activities
This year’s Pennseythen Gernewek will be hosted at Truro High School. Evening events will take place on site and will include music, films and other activities.
Growing interest in Kernewek
Interest in the Cornish language has increased significantly in recent years. Cornish is now being used in primary schools across Cornwall, while online communication has helped people from the Cornish Diaspora and beyond the Duchy join classes and conversation groups.
In recent weeks, Kernewek has also been recognised under Part III of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages by the UK government and the Council of Europe, placing it on the same level as other Celtic languages across the UK.
How to find out more
The Pennseythen Gernewek is open to people of all levels of Cornish. More information and tickets are available via the Kowethas an Yeth Kernewek website.
