A Week to Try Speaking Cornish

Speak Cornish Week is back this summer, running from Monday 23rd to Sunday 29th June 2025, and it’s all about encouraging people to give the Cornish language a go.

The annual event, run by An Rosweyth, brings together Cornish language community groups to celebrate and promote the use of Kernewek. This year’s theme is “Kernow ov vy” (I am a Cornish person), with a focus on getting individuals, schools, businesses and organisations to describe themselves using Cornish words and phrases.

Celebrating Cornish Identity

The week-long programme will include taster sessions, informal language meet-ups known as Yeth an Werins, and other events aimed at introducing Cornish to a wider audience.

Past themes have included “Prag na” (Why not?), “My a gar” (I love…), everyday greetings and even the challenge of getting your Cornish 5 a day by using five Cornish words throughout your day.

With more people now learning Cornish both across the UK and abroad, the language continues to grow in popularity. Volunteers are behind much of the work keeping the language alive, creating everything from textbooks and children’s books to running exams and community events.

Get Involved

There will be resources for businesses, organisations and schools, and full event listings will be published closer to the time at www.speakcornish.com.

To get started, here are two phrases shared by the organisers:

  • Kernow ov vy – I am a Cornish person

  • Lowen on ni – We are happy

Speak Cornish Week is a chance for people in Cornwall to connect with their culture, identity and language. Whether you’re fluent or just curious, this is the week to get involved.
