Anna Gelderd MP Backs £70m Government Plan to Expand Cadets in South East Cornwall
Anna Gelderd MP has backed a major boost for cadets in South East Cornwall as the Labour Government launches its new £70 million '30 by 30' campaign. The aim is to expand cadet forces by 30% by 2030, creating opportunities for over 50,000 more young people across the UK.
A New Era for Cadets
The expansion, part of the Government's Strategic Defence Review, is designed to break down barriers facing Britain's young people. Alongside building confidence and teamwork, cadets will have access to more qualifications and hands-on experiences with new technologies.
For the first time, RAF cadets have received approval from the Civil Aviation Authority to deliver the industry-recognised 'blue' drone flying qualification, making them the first youth organisation in Britain certified to train drone pilots.
The Government has also launched the search for a new National Cadet Champion to endorse and support cadet forces across the UK.
What It Means for Cornwall
Anna Gelderd, Member of Parliament for South East Cornwall, said:
"It's fantastic that there are already 15,585 cadets in the South West, who are learning vital skills to set themselves up for great futures. But, we want that number to grow so more young people have access to the great opportunities the cadets have to offer.
"I encourage young people, adult volunteers, and veterans who want to get involved to visit the cadets' websites for more information."
Expanding Skills and Opportunities
Labour's Minister for Veterans and People, Alistair Carns MP, added:
"Every young person deserves the chance to discover their potential, regardless of their postcode or family income.
"The cadet experience doesn't just build character – it transforms futures, helping young people build confidence, develop skills and meet new people.
"Our Labour government is kickstarting a new era for the cadets through this major expansion, backed by £70 million of extra funding."
The expansion package includes:
-
New joint Army and Air Cadet Centres, adding to the five already opened and 12 currently under construction.
-
A streamlined process for adult volunteers, including a fast-track for veterans.
-
Boosted STEM opportunities, with training in drone piloting and new cyber skills.
-
Greater involvement from regular and reservist military personnel in cadet activities.
Long-Term Impact
Independent research shows that cadets benefit significantly, with participants reporting improved school attendance, better behaviour, and higher chances of progressing to university or employment. For those from disadvantaged backgrounds, the effect is often life-changing.
The Government says this investment will also support cutting-edge training in cyber and submersible technology, reflecting the skills driving Britain's defence and economic future.
