Cornwall Council Urges Residents to Update Electoral Register Details
Cornwall residents are being urged to check their electoral registration details to avoid losing their chance to vote in future elections.
Cornwall Council has begun its annual canvass, sending emails and letters to households asking them to confirm or update who lives at their address. Those who have recently moved are being reminded to make sure their details are correct.
Postal voters warned to reapply
Over the next six months, the Council will also be contacting 65,000 postal voters who must reapply under new government rules, which now require postal vote applications to be renewed every three years.
Kate Kennally, Returning Officer for Cornwall and Chief Executive Officer at Cornwall Council, said:
“The annual canvass is our way of making sure that the information on the electoral register for every address is accurate and up to date. To make sure you don’t lose your say at upcoming elections, please follow the instructions we send you.
“If you’re not currently registered to vote, your name will not appear in the messages we send. If you want to register, the easiest way is online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.
“Anyone who applied for their postal vote before October 2023, will need to reapply if they wish to continue voting by post.
“We’ll be contacting postal voters separately and reminding them to reapply. You can do this online at www.gov.uk/apply-postal-vote, or ask us for a paper form.”
How to respond
Residents should follow the instructions in the email or letter they receive. To request a paper version of the postal vote application form, email voter.registration@cornwall.gov.uk or call 0300 1231 115.
If you’re not registered at your current address, you risk missing out on having your say in upcoming elections.
