Cornwall’s Future in Question: Could Devolution Across Borders Be the Answer?
Anna Gelderd MP Explores Devolution Options to Secure the Best Deal for Cornwall
Anna Gelderd, Labour MP for South East Cornwall, has called for a comprehensive exploration of devolution options, emphasising the importance of achieving the best possible deal for Cornwall and its residents. In a statement shared on her social media today, Anna highlighted the need for improved services, infrastructure, and opportunities in the region.
With discussions surrounding Cornwall’s devolution deal ongoing, Anna stressed the need for cooperation beyond Cornwall’s borders, given the unique geography and economic connections South East Cornwall shares with Devon. Many residents rely on jobs and public services across the Tamar, making cross-border collaboration a critical factor in tackling the area’s challenges.
“I believe we must explore every option to secure the best deal for Cornwall – one that serves local residents through better services, infrastructure, and greater opportunities,” Anna said.
Cornwall-Only vs Combined Authority
Anna acknowledged the appeal of a Cornwall-only devolution deal, which would grant more control over local decisions while protecting Cornwall’s cultural heritage. However, she cautioned against the potential limitations of such an arrangement.
“A combined authority deal with Devon could unlock funding and powers that Cornwall might not achieve alone, which would be crucial for addressing key issues such as the Tamar Tolls, A38 safety upgrades, and better cross-border healthcare,” Anna explained.
She emphasised the importance of safeguards in any combined deal to ensure Cornwall retains its unique identity and receives a fair distribution of resources.
Business Concerns About Devolution
Anna referenced findings from the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce, which revealed that 60% of businesses doubt the feasibility of a Cornwall-only deal under the current framework. While agreeing with this assessment, Anna assured residents that she would not rush into any agreement without considering its potential impact.
“If the deal isn’t right for Cornwall, I’ll reject it. But if it has the potential to secure the funding and powers we’ve long needed, we should be ready to act. This is about standing up for Cornwall, ensuring we don’t lose out on opportunities to deliver real improvements to our services, infrastructure, and economy,” she said.
Protecting Cornwall’s Culture
In her closing remarks, Anna reaffirmed her commitment to safeguarding Cornwall’s language, traditions, and identity in any devolution deal.
“Let’s be ambitious. Let’s work together. Let’s see what’s on the table,” she said. “And let’s make sure Cornwall has a brighter, better-funded future – one that respects our identity and delivers for everyone.”
Anna’s call for ambition and collaboration has placed the spotlight on the critical decisions ahead for Cornwall’s future. As discussions continue, residents will be watching closely to see what options emerge.
