Could Cornwall’s Future Be Debated in Parliament? Nationhood Petition Hits 11,000 in Days

Published On: 29 July 2025Last Updated: 29 July 2025By

A petition calling for Cornwall to be recognised as a nation within the United Kingdom has now gathered over 11,316 signatures, with more than 10,000 added in just three days.

That surge in support means the UK Government is now obligated to respond.

The online petition, hosted on the official Parliament website, demands Cornwall be granted nation status, recognising the region’s distinct culture, language, and identity. If the petition reaches 100,000 signatures by 11th September, it could trigger a House of Commons debate.

Momentum Building After Council Vote

The rise in signatures follows a motion passed by Cornwall Council earlier this month, which called on Westminster to formally recognise the Cornish as a national minority and acknowledge the constitutional relationship between Cornwall and the UK.

Since then, public interest has soared. The petition has a growing numbers of campaigners urging people to add their name before the September deadline.

Under the rules of Parliament petitions:

  • At 10,000 signatures, the government must issue a formal response.

  • At 100,000 signatures, the petition is considered for debate in Parliament.

What’s Next?

The official deadline to sign is 11th September 2025. If the momentum continues at the current pace, campaigners believe it could become one of the most talked-about constitutional petitions in recent years.
