South East Cornwall MP Calls for Improved Transport Links and Fairer Toll Charges
Calls for better buses, rail signal upgrades and fairer tolls in South East Cornwall
South East Cornwall’s MP Anna Gelderd has urged the Government to step up investment in rural and coastal transport links across the region.
Speaking in Parliament yesterday (8th July), Anna raised the issue with the Secretary of State for Transport, Heidi Alexander, calling for better infrastructure in towns and villages like Saltash, Liskeard and Polperro.
Push for reliable public transport
Anna said:
“I know that public transport in South East Cornwall can be difficult and in rural and coastal locations like ours staying connected both physically and digitally is extremely important.
“Yet, in places like Looe, Lostwithiel and Menheniot, people are being left without reliable options to get to work, school or healthcare appointments. I welcome the Government’s efforts to bring bus services into greater local control. Those in the area and using the services know what works best, it’s time they had more say.”
The Government responded by confirming its support for better integrated transport networks across Cornwall and highlighted the Bus Services Bill as a way to give communities more control over how bus services are shaped.
Mobile dead zones on Cornwall’s railways
The Secretary of State also confirmed that Anna had raised the issue of poor mobile signal along rail routes in Cornwall. South East Cornwall will now be included in the Government’s wider plans to eliminate mobile dead zones on railways, improving journeys and digital access for local residents.
Tamar tolls still a key concern
Anna again brought up one of her biggest concerns for the area: the impact of the Tamar tolls. She has repeatedly pressed the Government on the cost burden faced by South East Cornwall residents and is continuing to push for a “long-term solution that is sustainable and fair.”
No specific new commitments were made in response, but Anna said she will keep fighting to ensure the region is not overlooked.
