Anna Gelderd, MP for South East Cornwall, and Fred Thomas, MP for Plymouth Moor View, recently met with the Minister for the Future of Roads at the Department for Transport to address the future of the Tamar Crossings, specifically the Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry. The meeting highlighted the critical need for government backing to secure long-term funding and ensure accessibility for these essential crossings that link Cornwall and Devon.

Pressing Need for Support

During the meeting, Anna underscored the challenges posed by current and potential toll increases, emphasising the impact on local residents who depend on these crossings daily for work, education, and healthcare. Stressing the significance of government involvement, Anna commented:

“The Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry are lifelines for our communities, linking South East Cornwall with the rest of the country. I’m committed to finding a solution that keeps these crossings accessible, reliable, and fit for the future. I want to ensure existing services are maintained and that local infrastructure that works for locals. I’ll continue to fight for our residents and voice your concerns.”

Collaborative Approach Across Regions

Fred echoed the importance of sustainable, accessible transport, particularly for Plymouth residents who also rely on the Tamar Crossings. He noted Labour’s commitment to balancing service maintenance with protecting residents from future toll rises, saying:

“I know many residents in Plymouth rely on the Tamar Crossings. Labour is committed to keeping transport accessible and sustainable. We’re working together to find the right balance between maintaining current services and protecting residents from future toll rises.”

Building on Past Commitments

This meeting marks a significant milestone in Anna’s ongoing advocacy for South East Cornwall. Since being elected, she has made it a priority to represent her constituents’ views on the Tamar Crossings, striving to secure a solution that benefits local communities, supports local businesses, and sustains the regional economy, including the vital tourism industry. Fred similarly remains dedicated to pushing for solutions that will protect local interests and boost the wider economy.

As the dialogue continues, both MPs are set on finding a path forward to keep these crossings accessible for all.
