Cornwall Airport Newquay Takes Top Spot in Health & Safety Awards

Published On: 2 October 2024Last Updated: 2 October 2024By

Cornwall Airport Newquay has been recognised for its dedication to safety, winning the AirportsUK Health & Safety Award 2024 in the Small Airport category. The airport’s commitment to maintaining the highest safety standards has been credited for its win, following its efforts during the UK Airports Health & Safety Week.

Safety Measures That Stood Out

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Focus

Cornwall Airport Newquay placed an emphasis on PPE during Health & Safety Week, refreshing their PPE campaign with a poster featuring a well-known team member. Collaborating with brands such as Bolle, SC Johnson, and JSP, the airport held a PPE demonstration, showcasing the latest safety gear to staff. To make it more engaging, the airport ran a “Count the Ear Defenders in the Jar” competition.

Heightened Awareness of Working at Height

Acknowledging the risks of working at height, the airport organised ladder inspections and workshops to help staff recognise hazards. These sessions equipped employees to handle potential risks while working at elevated levels, helping maintain a proactive approach to safety.

Airside Safety Efforts

The airport also ramped up safety in high-risk airside environments by conducting Airside Safety Briefings and an Airside Driving Workshop. One standout activity was allowing staff to experience a push-back ride alongside larger aircraft, giving them firsthand experience of airside operations.

Keeping the Environment Safe

The airport’s Foreign Object Debris (FOD) Plod, which took place at Watergate Bay Beach, as well as on the aerodrome, demonstrated the importance of maintaining a clean and safe operating environment. Teaming up with the local charity Beach Guardians, Cornwall Airport Newquay ensured the area near their runway remained free of hazards. Staff were also trained in CPR, defibrillator use, and fire warden duties.

Collaborative Safety

Working closely with RNAS Culdrose, the airport’s Safety Swap Shop saw the exchange of safety practices. The collaboration allowed Cornwall Airport Newquay to apply military-grade safety knowledge to its operations. Awareness sessions with the airport’s Bird Control Unit also helped the team better manage wildlife hazards.

Continuous Improvement

The airport’s Health & Safety Committee meets regularly to discuss improvements, and staff are encouraged to report safety concerns through an anonymous system. This allows for ongoing refinement of the airport’s Safety Management System (SMS).

In-House Excellence

What sets Cornwall Airport Newquay apart is that all services are provided entirely in-house, allowing the team to uphold the highest safety standards. Hosting more than 40 activities from 13 to 19 May 2024, the airport integrated safety into its everyday operations, creating a safer environment for both staff and passengers.

By winning the AirportsUK Health & Safety Award, Cornwall Airport Newquay is setting a new benchmark for safety across airports of all sizes.
