Victory at top UK golf event for final-year student

A student from Cornwall College University Centre has claimed the title at one of the country’s top amateur golf events.

Josh Hayes, a final-year student on the BA (Hons) International Business Management (with Professional Golf) degree, topped the leaderboard at the West of England Golf Championship, competing against a field of 68 elite players.

Originally from Brighton, Josh is based at East Sussex National as part of his studies at Tournament Golf College, which is part of Cornwall College Group.

Training across Europe

The degree programme gives students the chance to spend a third of their course in Spain, where they benefit from world-class facilities, year-round training conditions and experience in international golf environments.

Josh said:
“I feel incredibly lucky to have chosen Cornwall College University Centre. The balance of high-level golf training with a degree that gives me a tangible qualification has been the perfect fit. The support, facilities and opportunities – especially our time in Portugal – have all helped me push my game to the next level.”

Josh began his studies with Cornwall College in September 2020 at The Golf College in Lindfield, West Sussex, where he achieved D*DD in the Sport Performance and Excellence Extended Diploma. Since then, he has been a regular winner in amateur competitions and is on course to graduate with a 2:1.

Balancing education and competition

The intensive course runs from September to April, allowing students to complete academic work before the UK golf season begins. It also includes the opportunity to compete in professional events and take on summer placements in either the golf or business industries.

Alex Lindsay, Head of The Golf Education Partnership, said:
“This is a huge achievement for any amateur golfer. Josh’s dedication and success reflect the high-performance environment we offer to our golf degree students.”

With future competitions and possible professional opportunities ahead, Cornwall College says it is proud to celebrate Josh’s win and the wider success of its golf students.
