From Cornwall to Madagascar: Local Volunteer Leads Dog Rescue Mission
In a remarkable journey from Cornwall to the exotic shores of Madagascar, Bryony Burns, a graduate from Duchy College, is making waves with her dedicated effort to rescue and rehome stray dogs.
A Passion for Animal Welfare
After completing her Level 3 Animal Management course at the Rosewarne campus of Duchy College, Bryony didn’t just aim to put her knowledge to use locally. Partnering with TSAP Travel, she embarked on a gap year that not only promised adventure but also a chance to make a substantial difference in animal welfare on an international scale.
Currently based on the island of Nosy Be, Bryony is spearheading a project that addresses the plight of stray dogs. Her work involves rescuing these animals and finding them new homes, a vital effort in an area where animal welfare education is much needed.
Community Engagement and Education
Bryony’s commitment extends beyond rescue operations. She is actively involved in the local community, focusing on educating the residents about responsible dog ownership. “We are carrying out beach cleans with the local community and I’ve delivered English classes based around animals and animal welfare, as well as my own dog ownership talk, to encourage locals keep dogs off the streets for their benefit and for the animals,” Bryony explained.
In just a short span of one month, her team has already seen success, having rehomed two puppies and provided essential care for several other dogs.
Impact and Recognition
Bryony’s efforts are a testament to the effectiveness of comprehensive animal management education. Katie Blackstone, Study Programme Manager at Duchy College Rosewarne, commended Bryony’s work. “Bryony’s story is truly an inspiring example of where a course in Animal Management at Duchy College can lead pupils. This exciting project has taken her beyond borders and into a world of new possibilities, using animal husbandry, conservation, and animal behavioural skills to make a meaningful global impact. We are all so proud and excited for Bryony, and can’t wait to see where her journey takes her next.”
