Cutting-edge Facilities and Programmes Aimed at Sustainable Construction

Cornwall College Camborne has officially launched the Green Construction Skills Academy, marking a pivotal step forward for sustainable construction training in the region. The academy is designed to equip both aspiring and current construction professionals with the vital skills needed for eco-friendly and energy-efficient building technologies.

The academy’s advanced facilities and tailored training programmes have been developed in collaboration with top employers, ensuring that learners gain the expertise needed to thrive in a low-carbon economy.

A Tour of Sustainability

During the official launch, attendees had the opportunity to tour the college’s impressive facilities. Highlights included the Brunel Skills Centre’s state-of-the-art engineering workshops and electric vehicle (EV) labs. Dedicated spaces for training in modern sustainable technologies, such as ground and air source heat pumps, solar thermal systems, and solar electrical systems, were also showcased.

Luke Bazeley, Head of Cornwall College Camborne, highlighted the institution’s commitment to sustainability, saying:
“As a community college, our mission is to serve the needs of the local community while driving forward a sustainable economy. The Green Construction Skills Academy is a vital step in preparing the workforce with the skills and expertise required to meet the challenges of a low-carbon future. By working closely with top employers and investing in cutting-edge facilities, we’re equipping individuals to lead the way in sustainable construction.”

A Collaborative Effort for Local Growth

The event also featured a speech from Ann Vandermeulen, Development Manager for the Federation of Small Businesses. She underlined the importance of connecting employers with skilled workers to support Cornwall’s shift to sustainable practices:
“Small businesses are at the heart of innovation and sustainability in our economy. The Green Construction Skills Academy provides an incredible opportunity to connect employers with the next generation of skilled workers, ensuring that Cornwall’s businesses have the tools and talent they need to thrive in a greener future. It’s also important for us to continue supporting initiatives such as this one.”

The official ribbon-cutting was performed by Inga Geach, sustainability and social value specialist at Cornwall Council, symbolising the council’s support for sustainable skills development.

Significant Investment in Sustainable Skills

Cornwall Council’s backing has played a crucial role in bringing the academy to life. Cllr Louis Gardner, portfolio holder for economy, shared details of the funding, saying:
“Over £3.34m from the Good Growth Programme has been invested to establish a Construction Skills Hub, which includes the creation of this new facility at Cornwall College Camborne and the soon to be opened facility in St Austell. This reflects the Programme’s commitment to fostering sustainable skills development and supporting the region’s transition to a greener economy.”

This investment is part of the Construction Skills Hub project, funded in part by the UK Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

What’s Next?

The Green Construction Skills Academy is now open to students, employers, and industry professionals looking to enhance their expertise and play a leading role in sustainable construction.

Cornwall College is also preparing for the next major launch.
