Cornish Homeowners Beware: Rogue Traders Charge £2,000 for Simple Jet-Washing Services
Cornwall Council Issues Urgent Warning on Door-to-Door Scams
Cornwall Council’s Trading Standards team has issued a stark warning to homeowners after receiving multiple reports of rogue traders demanding extortionate fees for jet-washing services. The warnings follow complaints from residents who were quoted prices as high as £2,000 for jobs that typically cost a quarter of that amount.
High-Pressure Tactics and Exorbitant Fees
The rogue traders have been reported going door-to-door in residential areas, offering to clean roofs and driveways. They entice homeowners by jet-washing a sample area, showcasing the potential improvement. Once a significant patch of the roof is cleaned, homeowners feel pressured to allow the work to continue, rather than leaving it incomplete.
Cornwall Council’s Trading Standards team has expressed particular concern for older residents, who appear to be the primary targets of these unscrupulous traders.
Authorities Speak Out
Martyn Alvey, the cabinet member responsible for Public Protection at Cornwall Council, emphasised the team’s efforts in addressing this issue: “Our officers have been out and about following up reports from the public, and are concerned that this group are targeting older residents. We urge residents to be extremely cautious of agreeing to work following a cold-call at the door. Where possible, only use trusted businesses, such as those who are members of the Trading Standards Buy With Confidence scheme.”
Gary Webster, Group Leader of Cornwall Council’s Trading Standards team, reminded residents of their legal rights: “The law requires that traders who agree services at your home must provide written information about the contract and services they are offering. This must include a 14-day cooling-off period in which you can change your mind. They should not be pressuring residents to agree work to start immediately.”
How to Protect Yourself
Residents are encouraged to stay vigilant and follow these tips to avoid falling victim to rogue traders:
- Do Not Agree to Immediate Work: Always take time to consider any offer and avoid agreeing to work on the spot.
- Request Written Information: Ensure the trader provides written details about the contract and services, including a 14-day cooling-off period.
- Use Trusted Services: Preferably use businesses that are members of the Trading Standards Buy With Confidence scheme.
If you suspect rogue traders are operating in your area or believe you may have been a victim, report the incident via the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 0808 223 1133. This helpline serves as the primary contact for all Trading Standards enquiries and provides practical advice for consumers.
