Cornwall’s Creative Future Secured with New Cultural Pact
Cornwall Council, together with national cultural bodies Arts Council England and Historic England, have renewed their commitment to enhance Cornwall’s creative sector through to 2030.
This collaboration underscores the growing significance of the arts, culture, and heritage in Cornwall, promising a vibrant future for its creative economy.
A Renewed Commitment
Originally established in 2019, the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between these organisations was a pioneering endeavour in the UK. The 2024 MoU reaffirms their pledge, highlighting key areas such as enhancing local places, bolstering the creative economy’s resilience, and promoting Cornwall’s unique cultural identity. This strategic alliance is set to invigorate Cornwall’s position as a leading creative hub in the country.
Strategic Investments and Projects
The MoU outlines several major projects that have already benefited from this collaborative approach:
Redruth Revitalisation
Historic England’s investment of £1.6 million has transformed the derelict structures along Redruth High Street, rejuvenating the area and paving the way for new ventures such as the Ladder in the old library and the Buttermarket project.
Royal Cornwall Museum Makeover
Arts Council England and Cornwall Council are injecting a total of £3.6 million into the Royal Cornwall Museum. This funding boost will facilitate essential renovations including the refurbishment of the building’s windows and roof, and a comprehensive overhaul of the main gallery and entrance.
Celebrating Cornish History
Edward Rowe’s ‘Cornish Caretakers’ project, supported by Arts Council England, creatively narrates Cornish history through the lens of two museum caretakers. This initiative has reached a diverse audience, from students in schools and colleges to visitors at local libraries, enhancing community engagement with Cornwall’s rich heritage.
Economic and Cultural Growth
With over 6,000 creative businesses and freelancers, Cornwall’s creative sector is not only preserving local heritage and culture but is also a vital economic driver for the region. The focus on digital media, film, and video games is propelling Cornwall to the forefront of modern creative industries.
Carol Mould from Cornwall Council stressed the importance of these collaborations, stating, “Culture, arts, and heritage are crucial in uniting communities and nurturing talent. This MoU is a testament to our commitment to supporting these sectors and reinforcing Cornwall’s status as a powerhouse of creativity.”
Darren from Arts Council England added, “Our investment of £19.5 million over the past three years has made a significant impact. Working closely with Cornwall Council and Historic England, we are starting a new chapter for creativity that will enrich the lives of artists and audiences alike.”
Duncan from Historic England commented on the cultural synergy, “Re-signing this MoU reflects the integral role of culture and heritage in creating dynamic and successful places. We are excited to continue this partnership, celebrating and preserving Cornwall’s distinctive heritage.”
Looking Ahead
This renewed MoU not only promises continued economic revitalisation through cultural endeavours but also ensures that Cornwall’s heritage and artistic sectors receive the support and recognition they deserve. As these organisations work together towards a common goal, Cornwall is set to redefine its cultural landscape, promising a richer, more vibrant future for its residents and visitors.
