Don’t Lose Your Vote: Cornwall Residents Urged to Check Voter Registration Details
Cornwall Council is urging residents to check their voter registration details to avoid missing out on the chance to vote in upcoming elections. This reminder comes as part of the annual canvass, a process that helps keep the electoral register up to date and ensures that everyone eligible to vote is correctly registered.
Why It’s Crucial to Check Your Details
The annual canvass is a vital part of Cornwall Council’s efforts to ensure that the information on the electoral register is accurate. Kate Kennally, Chief Executive of Cornwall Council and Returning Officer for Cornwall, emphasised the importance of this process, saying: “Keep an eye out for important updates from Cornwall Council. The annual canvass is our way of making sure that the information on the electoral register for every address is accurate and up to date. To make sure you don’t lose your say at upcoming elections, simply follow the instructions sent to you.”
One key point to note is that if you’re not currently registered, your name will not appear in the messages sent by the council. In such cases, registering online is the easiest option. You can do this by visiting the UK government’s voter registration site.
Home Movers: Don’t Forget to Register
Recent home movers are particularly at risk of not being registered. According to research by the Electoral Commission, people who have lived at their address for less than a year are significantly less likely to be registered to vote. In contrast, those who have lived in their homes for over 16 years are far more likely to be on the electoral roll.
Jackie Killeen, Director of Electoral Administration and Regulation at the Electoral Commission, highlighted the importance of staying registered, saying: “It’s really important that everyone who is eligible to vote is able to do so. We urge people to check for updates from their local council on this year’s canvass.”
What You Need to Do
Residents are advised to check their mail and email for updates from Cornwall Council. If you receive a message about your electoral registration, follow the instructions provided. If you find that you are not registered, take action immediately by visiting the voter registration website.
For those unsure about their registration status, Cornwall Council’s electoral services team is available to assist. You can reach them by phone at 01872 324 196 or by emailing voter-registration@cornwall.gov.uk.
Don’t miss out on your chance to have a say in the decisions that affect your community. Make sure your voter registration is up to date today.
