Tents to be Removed from Sandways Beach Campsite Due to Safety Concerns
Tents will be removed from the former campsite at Sandways Beach on the Rame peninsula following serious safety concerns.
The site, jointly owned and managed by Cornwall Council and Plymouth City Council, was leased to the Sandways Campsite Association for 15 years. That lease expired in March 2024 and was not renewed because of the risks posed by rockfalls and flooding.
Landslides and Expert Assessments
In recent years, several landslides have taken place at the site, with rockfalls landing dangerously close to tents. Geotechnical experts assessed the cliffs in 2024 and again in June 2025, concluding there is a serious and ongoing risk to anyone staying on the land, particularly overnight when people are sleeping.
The Environment Agency also reiterated its concerns in 2025, highlighting the dangers of flooding and storm damage. These risks are being made worse by rising sea levels and increasingly frequent storms.
Councils Take Action
In early June 2025, the Councils asked the Sandways Campsite Association to remove its tents. Regular discussions have taken place over the past two months, but officials have now confirmed that any remaining tents will be removed as soon as weather and tidal conditions allow.
This action, the Councils said, is necessary to ensure people do not put themselves in danger or risk being swept out to sea.
Cornwall Council Statement
Councillor Loic Rich, cabinet member responsible for Environment and Climate Change at Cornwall Council, said:
"Many people have fond memories of camping at Sandways. We understand that it's a really special place for visitors and locals alike, but safety has to be our number one priority.
"Due to the risks posed by both the cliff behind and the encroaching sea, we cannot allow people to stay there. It is simply too dangerous."
