The Cornwall Garden Society’s (CGS) Autumn Lecture Programme will begin in October with talks from botanist and plant hunter David Pearce, who is the thirteenth curator of Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens in Dorset.

Exploring Abbotsbury’s History

Abbotsbury, an immersive paradise on the edge of the Jurassic Coast, spans more than 30 acres and is home to more than 6,000 species from across the globe. David will share the garden’s 265-year history, exploring its design, philosophy and the plants that make it unique.

He will also offer practical gardening ‘take-homes’ for all types of gardens and gardeners, with time for questions at the end.

Lecture Details

On Tuesday 14th October at 7.30pm, David will present Abbotsbury: Past, Present and Future at The Alverton in Truro (TR1 1ZQ), immediately following the CGS Annual General Meeting at 7pm.

The following day, Wednesday 15th October at 2.30pm, he will give a second lecture, My Life in Horticulture, at Penventon Park Hotel in Redruth (TR15 1TE).

Both lectures are free for members of the Cornwall Garden Society. Non-members are welcome to attend to learn more about the Society, with donations gratefully received.

About the Cornwall Garden Society

The Cornwall Garden Society is a charity that exists to encourage and improve the science, art and practice of horticulture in all its branches. It shares knowledge about good gardening principles and Cornwall’s rich garden heritage, and works to promote, conserve, protect and study the natural environment, historic gardens and designed landscapes in the county.

The Society is affiliated to The Royal Horticultural Society and The Gardens Trust. Through the Pat & Margaret Wells Bursary, CGS provides support to those studying or intending to study horticulture at educational establishments in Cornwall on a full- or part-time basis, or in apprenticeships or other horticultural-related employment in the Duchy. The bursary helps with course fees, travel expenses or other study- or work-related costs.

Another highlight of the CGS calendar is its annual Spring Flower Show, which showcases breathtaking displays of Cornwall’s finest flowers and foliage. Exhibits are created by gardeners, horticulturists and enthusiasts who compete in the Competitive Classes, making it a standout event in the horticultural year.
