Trewithen’s first garden apprentice inspires with stories of Cornish gardens

The Cornwall Garden Society’s (CGS) January lectures are set to showcase an inspiring horticultural journey led by Millie Wykes. Millie, who began as Trewithen’s first-ever garden apprentice, has recently taken on a full-time role at this renowned Cornish estate.

From Lockdown to Leading Garden Tours

Millie’s love for plants began during lockdown when she started propagating house plants at home. Her passion grew rapidly, leading her to pursue a work experience placement in Trewithen’s garden department while still in school. During holidays, she continued working in the gardens, laying the foundation for her future career.

In 2023, Millie became Trewithen’s first garden apprentice and quickly gained recognition for her talent. She won three trophies in the Novice classes at the CGS Spring Flower Show, as well as multiple gold awards and silverware at the Falmouth Spring Flower Show. Her work contributed to Trewithen’s team success, which saw them collect an additional eight trophies.

Exploring Iconic Cornish Gardens

Thanks to the Pat & Margaret Wells Bursary, awarded via the CGS, Millie spent 2024 travelling across Cornwall to visit some of the world’s most iconic gardens. Her experiences and discoveries will be the focus of her lectures titled A World Tour of Cornish Gardens.

When and Where to Hear Millie’s Story

  • Tuesday 14th January at 7.30pm at The Alverton, Truro (TR1 1ZQ)
  • Wednesday 15th January at 2.30pm at Penventon Park Hotel, Redruth (TR15 1TE)

The lectures are free for CGS members, while non-members are also welcome to attend with donations gratefully received.
