Book Returned 45 Years Late Leaves Cornwall Librarians Stunned

Published On: 10 December 2025Last Updated: 10 December 2025By

A library book borrowed in 1980 has finally made its way back to Cornwall after turning up 45 years overdue.

A Long Journey Home

The book, Music Notation by Gardner Read, was originally loaned from Penzance Library and was due back on 25th March 1980. Instead, it resurfaced at St Ives Library in November 2025, decades after it vanished.

Its well overdue return was one of several during the November Book Amnesty, which encouraged people to hand back items they had forgotten about over the years. All returned books will now rejoin Cornwall Libraries stock so others can enjoy them.

No Fines and No Fuss

Cornwall Libraries does not fine borrowers for late returns at any time of year and welcomes members back regardless of how long it has been.

Councillor Sarah Preece, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Libraries and Culture at Cornwall Council, said:
“It’s wonderful that books like this one have been returned to the library service for other people to enjoy.

If you have forgotten to return books, whether it’s been months, years or decades, we’ll be glad to have them back, and to see you as well.

Our libraries are welcoming, safe spaces. If you have overdue books, you don’t need to be worried or feel embarrassed. There won’t be any fines, or fuss, we just ask that you return your books when you can.”

What Cornwall Libraries Offer

Cornwall Libraries provide thousands of books along with free digital resources including eAudiobooks, eBooks, eMagazines and eNewspapers. They also host a wide range of activities and events.

Cornwall Council supplies books, IT services and online resources to all libraries across the Duchy through the Cornwall Library Service.

There are 29 libraries across Cornwall along with a mobile library service. Twenty five of these libraries are run in partnership with town and parish councils, a community group and a social enterprise. Cornwall Council retains four libraries and also operates the mobile service.

Library membership is free for anyone who lives, works or studies in Cornwall. Activities and membership information can be found on the Cornwall Council website.
