Forgotten Library Books? Cornwall Says “No Fines, No Fuss” This November
Cornwall’s Library Service is encouraging readers across the Duchy to dig out their overdue books and bring them back this November, with a simple message: “No fines. No fuss. Just bring your books back.”
Fine-Free and Welcoming
Libraries across Cornwall will be holding a book amnesty throughout November, asking anyone who might have forgotten to return their books to simply bring them in. Cornwall’s libraries do not fine borrowers for late returns, and books can be returned to any library in the county.
Councillor Sarah Preece, cabinet member with responsibility for Libraries and Culture at Cornwall Council, said:
“The amnesty is our way of reminding everyone that the library doors are always open, and no matter how overdue a book might be, we’ll be glad to see it and so will others who may like to borrow it. It’s also a good chance to tell those who may not be aware that Cornwall libraries are fine-free all year round.
“We know some people might feel embarrassed about returning books they’ve had for a long time but there’s really no need to worry. Our message is simple: No fines. No fuss. Just please bring your books back.”
It’s Never Too Late
Paul Evered, Library Service Delivery Manager at Cornwall Council, added:
“Cornwall Libraries are warm, welcoming spaces and no one should be worried about returning overdue books.
“Whether your book has been at home for a few weeks, months, or even years, it’s never too late. Just pop it back this November and, while you are there, see what your local library has to offer.”
More Than Just Books
Cornwall Libraries offer thousands of books alongside digital resources such as free eAudiobooks, eBooks, eMagazines and eNewspapers. Many libraries also host regular activities and events for their communities.
Cornwall Council provides books, IT services and online resources to all libraries through the Cornwall Library Service. There are 28 libraries across Cornwall, as well as a mobile library service. Of these, 24 are run in partnership with town and parish councils, community groups and a social enterprise. Cornwall Council retains responsibility for four libraries and operates the mobile library.
Library membership is free for anyone who lives, works or studies in Cornwall. To find out more about local library activities or to become a member, visit Cornwall Council’s website
